Let's talk about D.O.M.A.

DOMA...what does it mean?

Please vote in my "poll"..upper right on the blog. Tell me "who you are"!!!!

I have given you the definition above. Click on the link for a comprehensive examination of the law. THE DEFENSE OF MARRIAGE ACT.

At this point the Federal Government does not recognize Gay Marriage....which is scary for ALL marriages. Right now I am married in about five states. If I lived in any of those states I would get the same STATE rights as any married couple. However, most of the benefits come from the Federal Govt. When a straight couple marries, you are recognized in ALL states. If your husband or wife becomes seriously ill in Illinois and you live in Arkansas you can still make decisions for your spouse. Gay people do not have that right. Aside from the five states that I am recognized, in any other state I have no power at all..except for the $8,000 I spent to make sure I was in control. I'm lucky. Gary's family accepts me as a brother-in-law, uncle and friend. Gary had another gay brother that died recently of an alcohol related disease. They are just used to us. When Johnny (Gary's brother died) we made sure his partner Perry benefited in a timber sale..he got an equal check. The family was nervous because he was in such pain...thus I met him personally at a restaurant and gave him the check. He felt more comfortable with me. He was shocked...it was a large sum...but we all felt that he was the husband of Johnny and deserved the same treatment. Unfortunately, Perry will never see a dime of Johnny's Social Security benefits (which were payed loyally out of every paycheck). I guess some straight person will get the money even though Franklin Roosevelt never meant for Social Security to go to anyone but the family members). As the timber business continues...including my own...we intend to include Perry...and I own four times as much timber as Gary's family...but I am married to Gary and I intend to respect my marriage and share the wealth. I want you to think about being fired for being black, a woman, a Jew, etc. It is LEGAL to fire me for being gay...and it has happened to me. It is NOT legal to fire anyone for any other gender or race issue...but America...that tells every other country how to treat human rights still discriminates against citizens...MY CITIZENS. I wonder why I even pay taxes. I can't get married except in a few states (I got married in CA. and then they overturned marriage...but F*** them...they couldn't figure out how to nullify my marriage...so I am still married in CA. But I am one of only 18,000 people. Is that fair? I have to pay great deals of money to make legal decisions for my husband. To "pull the plug" is my decision...but it cost almost ten grand. Both Gary and I pay for your children to go to school as conservatives say we should never have children. Contrary to most beliefs, gay people are not a rich class. Many of us are waiters, design assignments, hairstylists, etc. We do not sit at the top of the board room running billion dollar companies. It took me twenty years to break the gay glass ceiling and become a sales manager. Every company was glad to have me decorate their displays...but...they never wanted to move me up. I finally created MY OWN WAY to make it....but...not everyone can do that. If you know me, "I am a little bit smart..a little bit clever...and a LOT self interested". A lot of people are not that...they just go along with the flow.

It is TIME people...TIME for you to stand up for fairness...for Ellen DeGeneres...for Will Kolb...for your friends...and say enough is enough. Contact your Congressman and your Senator today and tell them that you have had enough of DOMA. The defense of marriage act is a sham. Recently a justice of the peace denied a multi racial couple a marriage licence. ENOUGH. ENOUGH...ENOUGH. It is time to respect all love in this country. If you won't recognize my marriage in your state, then it is my obligation to think you a couple of whores in mine. Love you all, Bratprince.

  1. Powerful, Will. Thanks.
There is absolutely no logical reason for DOMA ... it is nothing but legalized prejudice. There is no way granting legal protections to the union of a gay couple can threaten any heterosexual relationship. Straight marriage after all can be traced back to property rights ... the woman was the property and part of the wealth of the man. There was often little romance involved in marriage ... it was strictly a legal matter. It's almost a commonplace in medieval literature (think of Arthur, Guinevere, and Lancelot, just to name the most famous example) for the husband and wife to be married for power reasons, with romance and love sought elsewhere. It seems to me that if we could realize "marriage" is not about gender ... but about love, mutual commitment, and support ... not only would gay marriages benefit but straight ones as well.
