I once found Gibson intriguing ... I guess back when he did a more than creditable job in Zefferelli's "Hamlet." I took a friend who was somewhat Shakespeare-phobic to that film and he emerged moved and with a new respect for the play. But ... since then ... one ultra violent movie after another, and then after all the promos about the literally torturous "Passion of the Christ" (which I've never been able to build up the stomach to want to see ... one critic called it almost pornographically violent), and the news about Gibson's homophobic and antisemitic views ... the hypocrisy of this "fundamentalist Catholic" (who thought John Paul II was a liberal!) leaving his wife seemed to me the height of hypocrisy. I find it difficult now to have any respect ... for the man or the actor.
