I remember the very first time a "chick flik" hit me hard. At the time I was the Social Committee Film Chair of my college. I had the privilege of picking films that the whole college watched every weekend at our campus theatre. It was a rather large responsibility. The person that held the "job" before me made many mistakes and chose the wrong films for the time. When I came into office I promised myself that I would present great films...Academy Award Winners and Classics! To my amazement, attendance from students was over 300% above the previous year. I worked hard to present amazing films and am still proud that so many students attended the films I chose! Don't get me wrong...in the eighties..I still knew to present 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' and 'Animal House'. Still, I wanted to preview amazing films that were not simply cult classics. I am still proud that over 400 students showed up for my "Academy Award Festival" which offered such films as 'West Side Story', 'Lawrence of Arabia' and 'The Color Purple'. Still, the film the actually moved me was a "chick flik". I premiered "Terms of Enderment' for the first time at my college. I still remember the room...filled with hundreds of people...and me running the whole thing. I had seen the film in the theatre and not been moved to tears...but for some reason...on that night...when I was in charge...I literally broke down. I could barely stop the film. Many in the audience were in tears. What a great moment. Little did I know that I would soon live the same life as my mother died before my eyes. Point? Films can move us...they can make us feel...they are an amazing reflection of how we live! Although not presented today, I still remember my very dearest friend and I walking out of 'Field of Dreams' in a daze. We were literally mesmerized. In addition, I saw 'Steel Magnolias' with the same friend, Suzy....and we cried in the car after leaving the theatre. Thank GOD that movies can move us and make us face up to our own lives!
Yours, Bratprince
