Ice Makes For A Bunch of Dummies, by Bratprince

Okay, I admit it...I'm probably one of them.  I really didn't have anything I wanted to eat in the house....so I walked to the grocery store...my driveway is a giant hill covered in ice.  I drive a rather large car and I have never been able to get it down the driveway when iced over without it stuck in the middle of the yard.  Needless to say...tire marks and ruts drive my husband crazy.  He loves our yard...especially the grass for some reason and I care not to ruin it. I probably won't be able to get the car down the driveway for a few days yet.

Now, I admit...walking 3/4 of a mile and back to the grocery store in 19 degree weather probably isn't brilliant...but I spent three years in Colorado and know how to not only drive on ice, but to walk on it.  I mainly stuck to the snow...but when crossing ice rather than normally walking, I stomped my feet.....it gives you more traction.  I wrapped a scarf around my head (I'm sure everyone thought I was wearing a burka)...added my cap with a dragon on it that Gary gave me for Christmas a few years ago...put another scarf around my neck...threw on two pairs of socks and my boots...then added a very warm cashmere top coat and my new cashmere gloves Gary gave me this year.  To be honest, I wasn't cold...I even got a little warm.  Lot's of people in my neighborhood were walking today.  I saw a guy with both arms full of groceries take a terrible and frightening fall in the grocery store parking lot.  He couldn't even get up.  I got him to his feet, helped repack what groceries weren't broken...and offered to go get security in case he needed medical care.  Apparently, only his feelings and butt were bruised because he went on his way.

I made it home without incident...but what amazed me was the drivers (my husband was one of them that required a tow truck today...he and I will discuss his driving choices later...with me on the lecturing end).

I couldn't believe it!  People were trying to drive up large hills covered in ice.  Dallas citizens get ice once or twice a year..if that and have no idea how to drive on it.  As I was coming down the hill to my house I got to watch at least five cars slide back down the hill...almost hitting my neighbors gates.  What morons!  Lesson number one...we don't drive up hills covered in ice!

Next, today I received a very valuable piece of porcelain that I bought from Europe.  It was covered in labels saying "antique, fine porcelain, fragile".  My postman (the worst in the world) left it on my trashcan at street level (Don't worry...drivers going by the house can't see the trash can..it is hidden behind trees.  I know it would be tacky if seen.  However people walking can see it if  they come close enough to my gates).  Well, first...it could have been stolen if someone walked by..I left the gates open when I walked to the store..too much trouble to carry the gate opener in my pocket.....second...fine porcelain cracks in low temperatures.  Fortunately, I found it in time and it was safe.  I don't care if you have to walk up an acre to get to my front door, dammit...do your job.  If you don't like the fact that both my neighbors and I live on very large properties..then ask for a transfer.

Dallas is going to be stuck for a few days under a blanket of ice.  I am just hoping that people will use their brain and be safe.  Every time we have ice, many people are injured or die.  I hate to hear that.  Even though I loathe Jerry Jones who owns the Cowboys (yes..it is quite personal)...I still hope the upcoming Superbowl isn't ruined for the area.  We were expecting over $630 million in revenue, some of which would have gone easily to my husband's restaurant.  They do mind boggling business during conventions and sporting events.  http://www.yoranchsteakhouse.com/

To all my readers affected by the storm, BE SAFE, BE SMART..and try and stay out of trouble like my husband is in for driving up a hill!

Yours, Bratprince
