Gay Teens Less Likely to Attempt Suicide When Among Democrats
Lesbian, gay and bisexual teens are 25 percent less likely to attempt suicide in socially supportive environments, new research indicates. A study published Monday in
Pediatrics
surveyed 32,000 Oregon high school students about health issues, including sexual orientation, and found that schools with Gay-Straight Alliances, policies that specifically target LGBT bullying, and anti-discrimination measures that protect LGBT employees and students can drastically reduce the risk of teen suicide. Other indices of a supportive community include a higher proportion of same-sex couples and a higher proportion of Democrats in the county. Click here.
